The Google +1 Button - What is it? Why does it matter? How can I get it on my website?

Hi. My name is Caitlin Kaluza.

And I'm the Search Engine Marketing Manager

here at Schipul - The Web Marketing Company.

Today, we're going to talk about the Google
+1 button,

what it is, why it's important, and how you
can get it on your website.

First we'll look at what it is.

So I'm going to search for Schipul.

You'll see these little +1 buttons in your
search results.

So next to every result there's a +1 button
I can click on

and even next to the ads, I can click on the
+1 button.

This is sort of me telling Google that I like
this page,

similar to a Facebook like button.

You can see in this result,

I've clicked the button already and it says
that I've liked this.

I can +1 any URL by just clicking the +1.

You can also add this to your own website

and it looks a little bit like this.

We're on the SchipulCon.com website.

So I'm logged into my Google+ account

and I can see that four of my friends have
+1'ed this unique URL.

I can also hit the button and now the counter
moves up to five.

So how do you get this on your site?

Well, you go to Google.com/+1/button

and you can watch a little video, a little
bit more about the +1 button

or you can click this link here that says
"get the code."

From there, you place this text in the heading
of your page

and then anywhere you want the +1 button to
show,

you use this line down here.

So what it will do is it will add it for that
unique URL.

So you only have to add it in one place on
your template

and then, depending on the URL,

that's what will be attached to the +1 button.

So why does the +1 button matter?

Well, you'll notice, we talked about +1 buttons
in search results

that's a way to tell Google that people are
interested in this site.

They haven't incorporated it into the algorithyms
yet,

but I would guess that the plan is, if it
takes off, to make it so that

sites that have more +1's, more people like
them,

would show up higher in search results and
every one wants to show up higher in search

results.
